CSIRO's ten-year research program featuring the landscape-scale Kapalga fire experiment in Australia has provided a wealth of knowledge about savanna ecosystems and the critical but poorly understood role of fire. The frequent low-intensity fires examined in this volume characterize fire in the tropics and are a dominant force in shaping the structure and function of tropical ecosystems. Contributors discuss fire in relation to catchment dynamics, landscape ecology, biodiversity, and ecosystem management. Among the management issues addressed are carbon emissions, erosion and nutrient depletion, habitat management, biodiversity conservation, monitoring, and traditional Aboriginal burning practices. This book will be valuable to tropical ecologists, fire ecologists, and fire managers throughout the world, whether they are interested in plants, animals, soils, or in the landscape as a whole.

Though biogeography may be simply defined--the study of the geographic distributions of organisms--the subject itself is extraordinarily complex, involving a range of scientific disciplines and a bewildering diversity of approaches. For convenience, biogeographers have recognized two research traditions: ecological biogeography and historical biogeography. This book makes sense of the profound revolution that historical biogeography has undergone in the last two decades, and of the resulting confusion over its foundations, basic concepts, methods, and relationships to other disciplines of comparative biology. Using case studies, the authors explain and illustrate the fundamentals and the most frequently used methods of this discipline. They show the reader how to tell when a historical biogeographic approach is called for, how to decide what kind of data to collect, how to choose the best method for the problem at hand, how to perform the necessary calculations, how to choose and apply a computer program, and how to interpret results.

The Annual Review of Ecology, Evolution, and Systematics®, in publication since 1970, covers significant developments in the fields of Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, and Systematics, as they apply to all life on Earth. Reviews cover topics ranging from phylogeny, speciation, and molecular evolution through behavior and evolutionary physiology to population dynamics, ecosystems processes, and applications in invasion biology, conservation, and environmental management. This journal's primary audience are ecologists, environmental scientists, systematists, and evolutionary biologists.

The Phylogentic Handbook is a broad introduction to the theory and practice of nucleotide and amino acid phylogenetic analysis. As a unique feature of this book, each chapter contains an extensive practical section, in which step-by-step exercises on real data sets introduce the reader to the most widely-used phylogeny software including CLUSTAL, PHYLIP, PAUP*, DAMBE, TREE-PUZZLE, TREECON, SplitsTree, TreeView, SimPlot, and BOOTSCANNING. Chapters 1-10 provide a strong background in basic topics such as the use of sequence databases, alignment algorithms, tree-building methods, estimation of genetic distances, and testing models of evolution. Additional chapters briefly survey special topics in evolution, for example modelling evolution with networks, studying recombination, testing for positive selection, and methods in population genetics. The book will be an invaluable resource for advanced level undergraduate and graduate students, as well as for professionals working in the fields of molecular biology and evolution.
